About Kings Valley Diner

est. 1956

It all started in the quiet city of Newark, NJ in 1956. Steve Matthews and his Five brothers who had recently immigrated from Greece. The brothers fulfilled the American dream and bought their first restaurant, a Luncheonette, called the Capital Lunch. From that small kitchen arose dreams and plans that would pave the way to the opening of Baumgards in 1963 and the first Matthews Diner in 1969. The brothers would marry and have children, go their separate ways but they had created a legacy for their children to carry on.

Steve would marry Joanne and have two children, George and Ted. In 1986 after 30 years in the business Steve decided to retire. By 1992 after forays into other fields, the George and Ted decided they would continue the family tradition and opened up The Waterfalls in Ridgefield, NJ.

In 2001, Ted’s first of Five Boys Dimitri, decided to follow his father's footsteps and join the family business. By 2002, The Waterfalls needed to be renovated and would become the Gotham City Diner. In April of that year, they would purchase the Kings Valley Diner (then known as the Texas Lunch) in Kingston, NY and relocate to the Hudson Valley. In 2006, the Kings Valley Diner would undergo a major renovation, transforming to a more modern look, with bright colors, a large glass see through kitchen windows, new tables & booths and beautiful wood floors. In 2008, George opened the second Gotham City Diner in Fair Lawn, NJ.
